other stuff

So, I just added a new tab to the blog today, because it occurred to me that although I already write about a variety of subjects, there are topics that don't quite fit into the, "recipes",  "nutrition and wellness", "favourite things", "travel", or "grey matters" categories.  So rather than try to fit the proverbial square peg into the round hole, I'm going to file everything else under the "Other Stuff" label going forward.  (I may be the only one to derive satisfaction from doing this, but please, humour me anyway). :)

For my inaugural (doesn't that sound fancy?) "other stuff" post then, I'm just going to freestyle it a bit with a few random thoughts...

1. Spotify.

To those parts of the world that have been using Spotify for your music listening pleasure for a while, please bear with me while I wax enthusiastic about this AMAZING music streaming service.  It has only recently become available here (in pre-launch capacity) in the Great White North (aka Canada), and I am LOVING it.  (I tried signing up for it AGES ago only to be told we Canadians didn't rate - so I guess I was on their waiting list as one of the lucky Canuks to get to try it first). You can access just about any music that tickles your fancy - got a favourite artist?  Type their name into the search bar and behold their entire music catalog at your disposal, wherever you may happen to be, on any of your devices.  In the mood for something to dance around the kitchen to?  Some music to drown your sorrows by?  An audiobook, perhaps?  Well, it's ALL there, my friends, and if you don't mind the odd short promo in between songs, it's FREE.  Let me repeat....FREE!! Honestly, I have no earthly idea how this is possible, but I'm not complaining.  For a music lover who has tried it all, this is like manna from heaven.  You can create and share your own playlists, and "favourite" songs you love, both new and old. And if you want to spend a nominal fee, you can upgrade to the premium service, where you can ditch the dulcet tones of the Spotify announcer, and download songs to listen to - OFFLINE!  Like Netflix for music lovers.  But maybe even better.  I'm still waiting to see what the catch is.  And if there are Negative Nellies out there who have beefs about it (because let's face it, there are always NN's), I don't care to hear about it, because so far I can see no downside to this at all.  So calling all Canadian music lovers - sign up here for your own invite!!  And rejoice! :)

2.  Don't have a job you love?  Create one!

My beautiful new MOO biz cards!
So the other day, I was watching a show on HGTV (House Hunters International, to be exact), featuring a blogger who was identified as a travel writer, who was looking to relocate to Italy's Umbria region.  Yes, for the record, I was jealous ;-) and had to ask myself, "how the hell do I get such a gig????"  Well, NOT that I'm pulling up stakes and moving to Italy anytime in the near future -  but then it occurred to me - I AM a writer. After all, for better or worse, I write this blog, right?   On top of that, I'm a photographer too (have even been paid for my services on more than one occasion!) - AND to round out my little trifecta, I'm a bona fide, Certified Culinary Nutrition Expert, (a proud graduate of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition!) - so what's to stop me from officially identifying myself as one, or all of these things? That's where the awesome folks at MOO came in - and I sat myself down at their website, and designed and created my own BEE-U-tiful, SQUARE (beesquare!) business cards!! (I LOVE my phone case, speaks for itself, doesn't it?) Now, none of these ventures have me quitting my day job (so far), but there's no denying - I AM all those things - so why not present myself as such?  The power of positive thinking, people.... :)

In that same train of thought, please take some time to check out  fellow CNE Laura Olson's blog "A Life Delectable" - where she gives you her yummy recipe for a Banana Pecan Skillet Cake - and yours truly helped her out with a little food photography. :)

3.  On being "Authentic".

So the most amazing thing happened the other day!  I made a bloggie friend!!  Her name is Tracie, she is an American ex-pat living in Finland (!!)  (trying not to be jealous) ;-), a fellow music (and Spotify) lover, and she sews amazing custom creations, like these ADORABLE family pillows (I believe she has an etsy shop in the works...stay tuned...)

Best of all, she is a KICK ASS blogger - (which is to say, a kick ass WRITER).  I think you'll agree with me - please check her out at:

The lovely Tracie!
She "found" me via my Pinterest page (it's a work in progress), because like me, she's embracing her silver hair AND her curly-girlness at the the same time.  I was IMMEDIATELY a fan of her writing style - and her blog philosophy - which is to say she writes in her own authentic voice, and for her own pleasure, and nothing else. I am SO totally on board with that, Tracie!  (And I KNOW you were NOT expecting anything in return for your kind mention of moi....) - trust me when I say I'm paying this forward because I believe others will enjoy your (self-described) "quirkiness" as much as I do. Thank you for reminding me of the reasons I started this blog, and to write in MY own voice. :)

Oh - and Tracie, you also inspired me to give my curly locks another try - and my hair may just FINALLY be getting long enough to re-embrace my curls:

Somtimes it's a good thing my iPhone selfie lens is smudged - built in soft focus!! :)
Okay, so that about sums up my first "Other Stuff" post....but, LOLing here - because of course I instantly realize that all of the above things could easily be categorized under my "Favourite Things" tab....guess I can't help myself!  But what the hell, for today, Other Stuff it is!!  As my fave writer Liz Gilbert would say...Onward!! :)

the kindness of strangers { grey hair edition }

Ok, so maybe I'm naive when it comes to this blogging thing.  I follow a few bloggers who, beyond the pleasure of blogging about what they're passionate about, obviously are gaining a bit more than readership through their blogs.  For instance, one of my fave bloggers, Sarah of Thrifty Decor Chick, was actually approached by the manufacturer of "Sleep Number" beds, and given a brand new bed (!), free of charge. In perhaps the ultimate reward for blogging, the lovely and talented Joanna Gaines was rewarded with her very own HGTV show (!!!!) - "Fixer Upper" - which came about purely as a result of one of her blog entries being shared on another popular blog. I absolutely LOVE her style, and everything about that show - I'm seriously thinking of a move to Waco, Texas, just so Joanna and her adorable husband Chip can "fix up" a house for me! ;-) (In case it isn't obvious, I have a small passion myself for interior design/DIY - but that's another subject for another day). :)

At any rate, my reasons for blogging are purely for my own enjoyment - anything above and beyond that is the proverbial icing on the cake.  So you can imagine my delight when a few weeks back, the most lovely thing happened.

After I blogged (and subsequently tweeted) about my 10,000th view, it was picked up and re-tweeted by the lovely folks at White Hot Hair - or more specifically, by the founder of WHH, Jayne Mayled. A bit of background: White Hot Hair is based in the UK, and  makes a line of hair care products specifically formulated for grey/silver/white hair. As one with an obvious interest in such a line of products, I had been aware of WHH prior to them tweeting about my blog - but had been under the impression that it was a line only available to UK consumers.  I happened to mention this in response to Jayne's tweet - and she very kindly replied that if I sent her my address, they'd be happy to send me some samples.  Sweet!

I sent Jayne my address, and of course a big thank you for her kind offer....and a little over a week later - look what arrived in my mailbox - all the way from England:

Honestly, I literally gasped when I opened the package - when Jayne said "samples", I expected those little take-out ketchup sized packets - but this?  These weren't samples - they were beautifully wrapped, full size bottles/jars of the ENTIRE LINE of White Hot products! (yep, just as in the photo at the top of this post) WOW.  And here's the kicker - when I had written Jayne to thank her for her offer of samples, I also mentioned that I'd be happy to give the products a mention on my blog - but she deferred the offer, saying, "For me, the encouragement, inspiration and conversation is as important as the product, if not more so."  Truly, I was floored.

Now, again, maybe I'm naive about the "perks" of blogging - perhaps this sort of thing happens all the time to established bloggers - but to me, Jayne's generosity, coupled with her expecting nothing in return, went above and beyond the call of duty.  This filled me with SUCH a sense of gratitude, and spoke to me of the kindness of strangers - reminding me that there is good in this world - which sometimes presents itself  in the most unlikely and unexpected ways.

So what about those products?  Well, I'm happy to report that since receiving them, I've put them all to the test - and I'm LOVING them.  Without a word of a lie, my hair has never felt so soft and silky - and it smells delicious! Since transitioning to grey, I haven't really had a problem yet with "yellowing" - so I can't speak to the effectiveness of neutralizing yellow tones - but it definitely enhances the shine and brightness of my silver! I'm especially fond of the "shooshing creme" - demonstrated in this video by lovely Denise of "Grey Is OK!":

I also love the "lifeshine oil" - especially effective when blow-drying my naturally curly hair - provides great shine and sleekness!  Here's a shot after washing and styling with the products - I know you can't feel it or smell it, but trust me, it's soft, silky, and oh so fragrant! :)

I would highly recommend these products - definitely the best specialty product I've tried so far marketed to those with grey/silver/white hair. I hear that Jayne is perhaps looking for distributors in North America - but in the meantime, they are available for order online via the WHH website.  You can also check them out on facebook,  twitter, pinterest, and YouTube. :)

Thank you again, Jayne!  I know you weren't expecting a testimonial, but there's no way I could NOT sing the praises of your product - and I couldn't agree with you more, and I quote, "This is not the white flag of surrender, I'm just choosing a new colour, and it happens to be grey!"

sssshhhh! our little secret...

Wow, I've got quite a few posts up my sleeve with some practical info in them...but they continue to take a back seat to me getting my butt out of the chair, and away from the computer - especially now that summer is officially here!  So for now...they will just have to wait.  HowEVER...in the meantime, I thought I'd share a little secret with you.

First of all, it was simply a glorious first-day-of-summer weekend in my neck of the woods - I sure hope it was the same for all of you!  I saw a LOT of variations of this little graphic ALL over social media this weekend:

Ain't it the truth!  :)  And to make it even better, I had the whole weekend off (I usually work every other Sunday).

On Saturday, I FINALLY had a chance to follow through with plans that we'd been trying to make happen since early January - to take my mom to lunch at the Good Earth bistro/winery for her birthday (I just wrote all about my love for that place here) - but were always stopped due to the horrid winter we just endured. Well, it was finally a simply gorgeous day, and we did it!  My sister and eldest daughter accompanied us as well:

L to R:  My mom, daughter, and sister
Apologies to my sister, who probably won't be happy about that photo of her, but you know how it is, trying to get a good shot of more than one person isn't easy!

Anyway, the day was gorgeous, as you can see:

And as usual, the food was superb, in flavour, and presentation.  Case in point - the charcuterie platter we shared as an appetizer:

And then there's my absolute favourite dessert, these scrummy fruit wontons with a dulce de leche dipping sauce (I know, I know...sugar, deep fried, but what can I say - it happens, people!):

Well, I could go on about how much I love this place (and I probably will in future posts!), but needless to say, it was a wonderful start to summer, and to the weekend.  Now, for that little secret...

Yesterday, Rob and I decided to take the bikes for another spin, and believe it or not, we headed back Niagara way.  We settled on the Niagara Falls to Fort Erie portion of Ontario's Waterfront Trail - and what can I say, the day was spectacular.  But the curious thing is - it was a summer Sunday, the weather was off-the-charts stunning, the location couldn't have been more sublime...but we were almost the ONLY ones on the trail....for 50 kilometres! (there and back):

This is A-OK by me - I am decidedly NOT fond of having to dodge other cyclists, roller-bladers, runners, walkers, cars, you name it, when out riding my bike.  It's not that I'm anti-social, it's just so much less stressful when you're on a bike not to have to worry about bumping into someone accidentally - or having them bump into you.

So it is with some hesitation that I write about this trail...because I'd like to keep it our little secret. Kidding. Not kidding. ;-)

Anyway, if you live in, or plan to visit Southern Ontario, and you're looking for a fantastic place to take your bike for a little tour of the Niagara region, I would highly recommend this trail.  It follows the Niagara river the whole way, to Fort Erie - so for the entire length of the trail you've got river views on one side, and some gorgeous swoon-worthy homes on the the other side, and quaint bridges over babbling brooks and creeks. You can take it as slow or as fast as you like - we took about 4 hours to do it, with stops along the way:

But don't just take my word for it - a few sights from our little bike tour:

Couldn't resist!  You know my love for Waterlogue...

My future home...(well, it actually was for sale...I can dream, can't I?)
French Chateau with river view, anyone?  This one was for sale too...

Happy campers cyclists!
After finishing the day with a well-deserved beer and a bite to eat on the patio at the Riverside Tavern in the charming little town of Chippawa, Ontario, we headed home as the sun set over Niagara Falls:
The American Falls

Mist at the edge of Horseshoe Falls (the "Canadian" Falls)
Sorry about the quality on those last two - drive-bys from my phone - but you can't come to Niagara and NOT drive past the falls...(well, maybe you can, if you've seen them a gajillion times before) - but they're always a sight to behold - it never gets old!  :)

So all in all, not a bad way to kick off summer!  Hope everyone else had a spectacular start to the sunny season, doing what you love to do! :)

P.S. See what I mean? - we literally had the whole trail to ourselves:

when blogging takes a back seat to good weather...

Hello all!  HOOOO boy, have I been lazy with this blog over the past little bit.  I'm hopeful that doesn't mean my blog is about to find itself hurtling towards a cyberspace black hole (as previous attempts at blogging have) - that this is just a little lull brought on by increasingly good weather, and as such, spending less time in front of a computer, and more time pursuing other interests.  NOT that I've been doing anything TOO off the charts exciting - but I thought just to fill in the gaps between posts that may actually have some useful content, I'd write a little quickie about things I've been up to other than blogging - such as:

Wine touring with friends! :)

Living as I do in Southern Ontario, I'm fortunate to live within a very reasonable distance of Niagara wine country. Back in the day, believe me, that was NOT exactly something to toot your horn about, but over the years, our wine industry has gained HUGE respect the world over - now  "Wine Country Ontario" is not only something to crow about, it's a darn lovely place to visit on a sunny weekend afternoon with girlfriends. A few weekends ago we visited a few favourite wineries for a superb, local, farm-to-table lunch at Vineland Estates (sorry, all photos taken with my iPhone, so not the best quality, but far more convenient than toting around the big Nikon) - does this not look scrumptious?

Superb lunch at Vineland Estates
I promise you, it was as delicious as it looks - and those baby turnips and turnip puree were to die for! YUM. Wish I was back there RIGHT NOW eating this all over again.  But I guess that's what iPhones and food pics are for, right?  As annoying as food pics can be, they do help you recall memories of a fantastic meal....  :)

We all left with a bottle of Vineland's wonderful 2012 Pinot Grigio - a lovely, refreshing, and crisp wine, tinted a subtle shade of pink:

Could we LOOK any happier? :)
After lunch, we visited Featherstone Estate Winery for a tasting - I'm telling you, it may not be the wine country of France, Italy, or even California, but on a gorgeous late spring afternoon, Ontario wine country is still every bit as charming as any wine destination in the world:

The inviting back porch at Featherstone Estate Winery
Lovely, isn't it?  I could have just whiled away the entire afternoon on that bench....

Last but not least, we visited what has to be my absolute favourite winery in the Niagara Escarpment/Twenty Valley wine region - The Good Earth:

Saved the best for last...
I can't say enough about this winery, which includes an absolutely superb onsite bistro.  There's just something about it that embodies, for me anyway, everything a winery should be - wonderful wines, a restaurant that serves absolutely delectable farm-to-table meals - but at the same time, it doesn't take itself too seriously.  You don't need to be a snooty wine connoisseur to enjoy The Good Earth (but I suppose if you are, there's still a LOT to enjoy here!) The owner, Nicolette, couldn't be a more approachable, down to earth (no pun intended!) hostess - and that's not just because I caught her on a good day - each and EVERY time I've been there, she's been friendly, warm, witty, and welcoming (I suppose one could say who WOULDN'T be with such a job!)  :)

Top it all off with the simple, bucolic beauty of the surroundings, and you've got, in my books, just about the perfect winery.  When the sun is shining in Ontario, I'd gladly enjoy a wood oven pizza and a glass of Betty's Blend or Sauv Blanc under the vine covered trellises on the Good Earth's outdoor patio any day - who needs to travel to Tuscany when you've got this in your own backyard?

The view from our patio table at The Good Earth
Playing chicken with...a chicken! :)

You had me at the outdoor pizza oven...
Holy Fork!!
What I love about Good Earth, is that it's consistent.  You know when you go to a restaurant/destination for the first time, and you're blown away - so much so that you vow to return again soon - but when you do, the experience is 360 degrees different (worse) than your first impression, and you wonder what on earth was so great about it the first time?  Well, hopefully I'm not about to jinx it by writing this, but the Good Earth is exactly the opposite of that.  Although I've only been 3-4 times, each and every visit has left me wanting to come back for more - it's never a disappointment - in fact, it only gets better! Thank you again Gaylene, Tracy, Jessica, and Jill, for a memorable day - with a special shout out to Nichole for being our very patient designated driver! :)

So there's a small window into what I've been doing with my spare time other than blogging - besides this lovely day of wine touring with my girlfriends, Rob and I had a chance a few weeks back to take our first small bike tour of the season, along a portion of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail:

On the banks of Lake Ontario, near Welland, Ontario - just a few weeks prior, this was covered in snow!
The good news is, you REALLY do never forget how to ride a bike - the bad news is, it's been a LONG winter of being inactive. :(   It's going to take a few bike rides to get up to speed...but still, it was great to get back in the saddle, so to speak! :)

Last but not least, and NOT that I want to make you jealous....but I've also been - wait for it - housecleaning/organizing!!  (I know, you wish you had my life, right?)  Here a few little bedroom/bathroom organizing projects that I'm particularly proud of - both courtesy of Ikea (have I mentioned before how much I LOVE Ikea?):

Note the coffee cup holder for bracelets!

Both are pretty self-explanatory - and incorporate the use of Ikea's Bygel rail and S-hook system.  It may not be pretty - nor everyone's cup of tea to have a visible wall of necklaces or hair styling appliances - but it sure solved a few organizational problems for me!

Well, I suppose I've covered a variety of topics in one post in what could easily have been stretched out to two or three posts - but like I say, who knows where my (sparse) free time will take me during these oh so fleeting summer months - so better to get it all out there in one shot when the mood strikes. Oh, I'm sure I'll continue to write now and then through the summer - in fact, I've had a fun post up my sleeve for a while that I hope to publish shortly.  In the meantime, however, may I take this opportunity to wish anyone who is reading this an absolutely wonderful summer - I hope you enjoy it to the fullest with friends and family alike. One of my absolute favourite things to do during the summer is attend outdoor summer concerts (we'll be seeing James Taylor in July, yay!) - so I'll leave you with this - a song that for me, evokes the spirit of the sunny season - "...'cause a little bit of summer makes a lot of history!" :)

Enjoy, all!! :)

it's just another day

This post may contain affiliate links to products or services I use, enjoy, and wholeheartedly endorse. Should you choose to make purchases through these links, not only are you supporting the companies or products I believe in, you are also throwing a little support my way. Thank you!

Let's start here, shall we?  You may want to listen to this as you read... :)

So....after that little classic musical interlude -  (sorry, when I was thinking about what I would write in this post, that song came immediately to mind - and I had to share it!) :)

ANYway.....I was getting ready for work this morning, and it dawned on me.   In the past year or so, since I've been attempting to take more active control of my health by making conscious changes to my diet, lifestyle, etc., my morning routine has also changed somewhat (hopefully, for the better).  And as I was standing in front of the bathroom mirror partaking in the usual morning rituals that most of us do, whether we work from home or at an office, I thought it might be fun to do a little "day in the life" (or at least start to a day in the life) post about my morning routine.  Apologies in advance if this comes across as somewhat self-indulgent - but it occurred to me that I'm quite pleased with some of the changes I've made, and that you might also be interested in some of the products I've been using that I've been happy with.

The first pertinent thing I did today was something that is still very new to me - I took a therapeutic dosage (three capsules) of of this little miracle - SierraSil Joint Formula 14.

As one who has been suffering increasingly from joint/muscle aches and pains (age related/arthritic) - but also as someone who prefers to be as pharmaceutical-free as possible, I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that with each passing year, this was a problem that was only going to get worse. But lately, those aches and pains had seriously been encroaching on my quality of life, and the occasional doses of Aleve were starting to become more frequent (NOT a good thing - Naproxen definitely helps relieve the pain, but the dangers can outweigh the benefits).  When I had a sudden onset of severe shoulder pain last week, I was ready to try anything - and decided the time had come to try something my daughter had been recommending to me for months (yep, the aforementioned SierrasSil).  She had never tried it herself, but is of course aware of my complaints - and had been hearing repeated testimonials to it from Erin Davis, a local radio personality here in the greater Toronto area.

Maybe Meg (my daughter) had just been tired of hearing me complain of all my aches and pains, but whatever her motivation,  the time had come to take her advice - so I ponied up $60.00 for a large bottle. Now, I've learned to be pretty picky about what I'm putting in my body, and to question the ingredients of everything....so after some fairly extensive google research, I discovered that SierraSil is a legitimately all natural mineral supplement (basically derived from clay from the high Sierra mountains - hello Shailene Woodley!), and try as I might, I could not for the life of me find ANYTHING negative about it on the web.  Nothing.  Nada. It was ALL good.  So I took my morning dosage as instructed (on an empty stomach), and waited to see what would happen.  And literally OVERNIGHT my shoulder pain (which was severely impairing my ability to lift my arm) was GONE.  Gone, people!  I awoke the next morning with full shoulder/arm mobility.  Since then, I've been taking it steadily for a week - and without a word of a lie, the aches and pains that I've had for AGES have dissipated noticeably. I have no earthly idea if this is totally a placebo effect or not, but whatever it is, it's actually working for me - and I have ZERO to gain from telling you this - I'm not being paid ONE. RED. CENT. to extol the virtues of SierraSil.  Now, keep in mind we are all different - what works for one person, may not be effective for another - but it seems to be working favourably in my case.  I'll monitor my progress and let you know how I feel after a few months... :)

So, next thing I did was open up my vial of lavender essential oil, and take a deep inhale:

Instant tranquility. Honestly, I wish there was a "smell-o-blog" feature so that you could all experience the gorgeous scent of this oil.  Essential oils are extremely therapeutic - even the simple act of inhaling their scent can release chemicals in the brain that stimulate emotions - in the case of lavender oil, it has the ability to release serotonin, thus promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.  It's important however, to make sure you're buying the purest of essential oils available - i.e. 100% pure botanical extracts, and not chemical replications (chemical duplicates will not evoke the same biochemical responses in the brain).  I purchase my essential oils from Living Libations.  I was introduced to the Living Libations line of products last year, and LOVE them. Not only do they make the purest of essential oils, Nadine Artemis of Living Libations concocts an extensive line of the most deliciously pure and natural beauty products I've ever tried (which I will happily be expanding on in a future post!).   But back to the essential oils - after inhaling the calming scent of the lavender oil, I put a drop in my palms, rubbed them together, and transferred the scent to a dry skin brush for a pre-shower round of dry skin brushing:

I have two brushes - a long handled and short handled
Always brush upwards in a circular motion - towards your heart.
You can purchase skin brushes in a variety of places - I got my long handled one at my local Rexall drug store, and my short handled one comes from the Body Shop.  Dry skin brushing is one of the best things you can do for yourself, and takes less than a minute - it's detoxifying, increases lymphatic drainage, and leaves your skin glowing.  All good, right? Take a look here to watch a short video from Meghan Telpner about the how-tos and multiple hidden benefits of dry skin brushing.  :)

Shower all done, I dried my hair whilst standing on another recent purchase - my Spoonk mat:

Pardon my lily-white legs!  And I definitely recommend socks when standing on the mat!
Yep, I know.  This looks like a device of torture - a literal bed of nails, if you will.  But it's actually quite the opposite.  Working on the principles of acupressure and shiatsu massage, the Spoonk mat offers you the ability to receive the effects of the above mentioned therapies without having to travel to a therapist - and you can take it with you wherever you go.  It energizes muscles and gets the blood flowing, but can also be used to relax muscles after a workout, help relieve headaches, and increase relaxation. Maybe it works because it distracts you from thinking about other aches and pains when those SHARP little pointy discs are digging into your skin ;-), but honestly, I find it to be extremely effective - and surprisingly, a "good" kind of pain. Again - NOT being paid to endorse this - I just honestly love the positive benefits I've derived from it!

All dressed and ready to go, it was down to the kitchen for a green smoothie, and to prepare a meal to take for lunch in my mini-crock pot, (which I wrote about here).

I'll admit, I don't always have the time to fit all these things in every day - most days it's a mad scramble out the door for the commute to work - but I find that when I DO have the time for these simple morning rituals, my day overall is better for it.  At least I think I look fairly happy as I'm about to head out the door...better to start the day with a smile on your face! :)

How about you?  Do you have any morning routines/rituals/products that get YOUR day off on the right foot? :)

getting serious about blenders (plus a sunny green smoothie recipe!)

This post contains affiliate links to products or services I use, enjoy, and wholeheartedly endorse. Should you choose to make purchases through these links, not only are you supporting the companies or products I believe in, you are also throwing a little support my way. Thank you!

Hello again!  Well, now that my blogger's block has seemingly been remedied (at least for now), it's time to get back to work!  And what better way to start than with a recipe for a smoothie that says SUMMER! (Goodness knows we need to look for the sun wherever we can find it - the weather surely isn't cooperating these days!)

But first...a word about BLENDERS. (Now don't get TOO excited!) ;-) Until I really started to pay attention to what I was nourishing my body with, I'll admit, smoothies weren't something I ingested on a regular basis. Part of that was not being a "smoothie person" - the idea of a meal in a cup just seemed uninteresting to me - and part of it was the fact that I've never had a blender that did what it was supposed to do properly and consistently.  At one point, my daughters introduced me to the now ubiquitous Magic Bullet - and yes, I'll admit, there's no arguing with the price point, the ease of use and clean up, and the fact that it did what it was supposed to do - make a decent single serving smoothie in under a minute. But then the problems began - when a family of four was using it regularly, it buckled under the strain - and what we basically had on our hands was a disposable blender.

By the time our Magic Bullet had decided to give up the ghost, I was starting to pay closer attention to the amazing nutritional benefits of the simple smoothie - and felt the time had come to up the ante in the blender game.  It was also around this time that I started to hear more about the Vitamix blender - how it was so much MORE than just a smoothie blender - you could use it to create everything from fresh fruit sorbets to flavourful soups (that actually warmed during the blending process).  On top of that, they're pretty much standard equipment in the kitchens of the world's best restaurants, not to mention your favourite smoothie bars and coffee joints.  At the time, I worked part time for Crate and Barrel, and had a pretty sweet employee discount, and yes, C&B carried the Vitamix line. So I was ready to go for it - but then I learned that even WITH my discount, a Vitamix would set me back for about $500.  Whoa, Nelly!!!  This is just a blender!!  Who pays $500 for a BLENDER???  Try as I might, I just couldn't justify it, even though a good friend of mine had just purchased one, and was already telling me how it was changing her life.  Still, I was skeptical.  Uh-uh.  No way.  Not me.  So I decided to use my discount to buy a top of the line (and well-reviewed) Kitchen Aid blender - which set me back for just over $100.  I was going to prove the Vitamix enthusiasts wrong!! You don't need to spend a King's ransom to produce a decent smoothie!!

Feeling rather smug, I loaded up my shiny new Kitchen Aid for its inagural green smoothie, and pressed the button.  And heard a sort of sputtering, clunking, TRYing sound from it - not a promising start.  Okay, so most blenders don't sound all that great - it's the end product that matters, right?  Well, the end product in this case was a big, icy, chunky, strawberry-seedy, disappointment.  This just wasn't the creamy, well, SMOOTH smoothie that it was supposed to be.  I wasn't going to be making creamy soups and silky smooth sorbets with this blender.  And in that moment, I had to admit defeat, and the old adage "you get what you pay for" - came glaringly to mind.

I'm sure you can guess the rest of the story - I decided the time had come to make an investment in my health.(As corny and cliche as that may sound, it's 100% true).  I bit the (magic) bullet :), found a buyer on Kijiji for my Kitchen Aid to help absorb the cost somewhat, and bought a Vitamix!   I can honestly say, without a word of a lie, that this is one kitchen appliance I've used on a consistent, almost daily basis, for the year since I've purchased it. And true to its billing, not only does it produce the smoothest smoothies, but I've also created delicious sauces, and nutrition-packed, warming soups.  Feel in the mood for frozen yogurt?  No need to head to your local fro-yo joint anymore - you can produce the same (or better) thing at home - with less sugar, and fresher fruit.  It's fast, it's fresh, it's a powerhouse.  And it should last long enough to hand down to my (future!) grandchildren.  So although you do lay down a fair amount of cash at the outset, you will likely NEVER need to replace it.  (That said,  in the unlikely event that something does go wrong with a Vitamix, they've got customer service second to none).  Honestly, once you try it, you'll understand - some people even travel with their Vitamix, they find it such an essential part of their lives - check out one of my all time fave musicians, Michael Franti, rocking his Vitamix (with the added bonus of his recipe for an awesome salad dressing!):

Now, all that said, while this is definitely an investment in your health, I concede it is still quite a serious financial investment as well, and that it may not be in everyone's budget.  However - if you, like me, have reached a point where you think a Vitamix would be an essential tool in your kitchen AND your health and wellness regimen, I'm here to offer you a small reprieve.  As a proud Vitamix affiliate, I am authorized to offer you free shipping if you order direct from their website. To lose the shipping costs, you can click on the Vitamix graphic on the sidebar to the right to order online....(I love the look of the newest addition to the Vitamix line - their S30 personal blender - so adorable!)

OR, if online shopping isn't your thing, call Vitamix toll free at 1-800-848-2649 and use this code: 06-009805 - to get free standard shipping ($25US/$35CDN).  I know it's not a huge amount, but hey, every little bit helps!  If you're not ready right now, the offer on free shipping is indefinite - feel free to come on back if and when you're ready. :)

Okay.  So much for my little sales pitch - if you've gotten this far, thank you for reading - but please also know that I will NEVER endorse a product that I'm not 100% passionate about - I truly BELIEVE in this product.  As your reward for sticking with me, here's how you might put your Vitamix to good use if you already have one - or when you get one.  (This recipe will work in a regular blender...it just won't be as smooth a smoothie as a Vitamix smoothie!)  So without further ado, (and hopefully a refrain from using the word SMOOTHIE any more) - here's my recipe for a tropical, sunny, summer.....s-word ;-) that will not only taste AHHH-mazing, but will boost your nutrition levels to the max!

Pineapples and mangoes top the list of fruits that have potent anti-inflammatory properties - pineapples for their active enzyme bromelain, and mangoes for their polyphenols (organic micronutrients) - so slurp up the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant goodness in this delicious, easy to make smoothie and enjoy the added benefits!  (Remember, strive to use organic ingredients wherever possible!)

Ingredients

1 c. almond milk (you can use store bought, but with a Vitamix, you can make your own - which is always the best choice.  Tutorial to come...) :)
1 c. chopped fresh pineapple chunks
1 c. frozen mango (or a mixture of mango and strawberries)
1 handful spinach
1 tbsp. hemp seeds
1 tbsp. chia seeds (for protein and to help thicken)
1 tbsp. goji berries

Instructions

Place all ingredients in the blender in the order as listed.
Blend.
Enjoy!

spring cleaning and snowballs

An appropriate title, given that I did some MAJOR spring cleaning over the weekend, and today, after being teased with summer-like temperatures for the past week or so, we're being plunged back into SNOW. Ugh. Enough already!!

But back to the subject at hand.  You know how it is.  You start a spring cleaning project thinking it will take you an hour or two max - a little power dusting here, fluffing the sofa pillows there - and before you know it, you've rearranged/organized ALL your kitchen cabinets, and you find yourself at 11 p.m. on a Saturday night building Ikea furniture you just made an emergency trip to pick up because the way you've just rearranged the furniture needs a sofa table to tie it all together.

Oh...you don't know how it is?  Really, is it just me?  Okay, well, maybe the scenario isn't exactly the same, but what I'm getting at, is, we've all started projects that have snowballed out of control.  And I'm lucky that this particular one didn't break the bank (gotta love Ikea!).  Anyway - what started out as this:

Ended up as this:

Check out my story on Apartment Therapy  to read how I hacked my Ikea Lack coffee table :)

Maybe not the most dramatic difference, but the most important thing is, the floors are clean, the dustbunnies are gone (for the moment anyway), and the place does feel lighter, and fresher. (And let's face it, every room looks better with a cat sitting in a sunbeam). :)  I even ended up with a few things that might find their way to Kijiji, to cover the cost of the new sofa table, so, bonus!  (Simplify, simplify, simplify!)

So that was the den - but what was that about the kitchen cupboards?  Well, about a year ago, when I decided the time had come to buckle down and get serious about eating healthier, I did a complete pantry overhaul - I tossed anything that was processed (goodbye KD!, farewell, Chips Ahoy!) - and restocked with whole ingredients - a variety of nuts and seeds, gluten-free flours and pastas, raw honey - basically all the GOOD stuff.  I also invested in one of these:

...and I L.O.V.E. it.  I wanted to label anything and everything in sight.  (Seriously, I would label my cat if she would let me). :)  But it does come in especially handy when you're doing a pantry overhaul - because a lot of the ingredients I named above are bought in bulk - and there is nothing worse than a cupboard full of plastic bags with missing labels that have you sniffing out the contents to try to guess what it is exactly that's inside.  Over the past year or so, some of those plastic bags with mystery contents were starting to creep back into the cupboard, so I had a bit of a mess on my hands:

Enter the ever versatile mason jar, and the aforementioned label maker - and before you know it, your pantry is pinterest-worthy organized!

These wide mouth funnels are great - get them at the dollar store!
But then THAT led to cleaning out my appliance cupboard:

It's embarrassing, and neither is all that beautiful - but hey, at least now it's clean and organized!
And the bottom line is....I'm STILL not finished my spring cleaning.  But I'm getting close.  And since today we'll be having a temporary "winter", I'm not going to panic.  I'll just finish it up in a few days - when it's spring again. :)

the inconvenience of convenience (or, a few more favourite things, wellness edition)

Hello again!  Whoa, last week was a BUSY week for me!  But definitely busy GOOD as opposed to busy bad - I will hopefully be writing a post in the not too distant future to fill you in on what I was up to last week. (In the meantime, you can check out the latest photos in my instagram feed if you want to go looking for clues). :)

Well, as I told you a few weeks back, there was a very good possibility that you hadn't heard the last of my "favourite things" - I just didn't think I'd be back this soon with another installment.  This time, however, rather than fashion accessories, I'm going to wax enthusiastic about some very functional items that are near and dear to me - because not only do they do what they're supposed to do SO well, but they assist me (and possibly you!) on the road to wellness.

Yep, you heard me, wellness.  Sorry, I know it's one of those terms that you're probably sick to death of hearing - but if you've been paying even the slightest bit of attention to this blog, you've read my story, and you know that after many years of unconscious consuming (food and otherwise) the proverbial lightbulb went on, and I realized that the time was NOW to start taking positive action towards a more healthful way of living.  While I learned that for me, a primarily plant-based diet was key, I also came to learn that the things I had typically been using to prepare, store, and eat/drink my food could potentially be contributors towards ill health.

Now is probably a good time to say that I prefer to take a positive stance in this blog - so hopefully, there won't be too many doomy and gloomy posts about why you shouldn't be doing certain things, and more about the GOOD stuff.  However - sometimes you do need to know the bad in order to emphasize the good, so I might have to be a Debbie Downer once and a while.  Also, I'm not being compensated in any way to endorse the items I'm about to sing the praises of - I'm truly just writing about them because I use them, I believe in them, and I love them!

So let's start with the lovely Jennifer Lawrence, shall we?

Jennifer Lawrence in "American Hustle"

Have I got your attention? :) Who saw American Hustle?  I did, and I LOVED it.  (Maybe you had to have lived through the '70s/early '80s to fully appreciate it, but I thought it was brilliant).  Anyway, if you've seen it, you'll recognize the above clip in which Jennifer Lawrence's character defies her husband's instructions to NOT put "metal in the science oven" (i.e. microwave oven).  Of course, when she does what she was instructed not to do, the oven explodes, and in her defense, she retaliates by telling her husband that she doesn't want something in her house that causes fires and "takes all of the nutrition out of our food".  Now, I'm not so sure that would have been something people were concerned with back when microwaves came on the scene - as I remember it, the first microwave that came into my house was hailed as a miracle oven, doing everything from melting butter in a split second to cooking a roast in a fraction of the time a conventional oven would - all in the name of convenience.  In fact, I distinctly remember my mother once cooking an entire roast in a plastic dish pan (!!) - before the advent of "microwave friendly" cookware.  We were in awe!!  Yep, nutrition (or lack of it) was the last thing on people's minds.

As it happens though, Jennifer's character was spot on - microwaving food can deplete food of its nutrients. For example, when broccoli is steamed conventionally, it loses about 11% of it's beneficial antioxidants. However "nuke" your broccoli (seriously, just the fact that microwaving food coined the term "nuking" should be enough of a deterrent) - and your broccoli loses up to 97% of its antioxidants.  So you're left with...essentially empty, flavourless,  food.  And then there's the practice of heating pre-packaged foods in a microwave that are usually sold in plastic containers (Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine, anyone?)  Of course, this is decidedly NOT a "healthy choice" at all - it leads to the release of a myriad of known carcinogens into your food.  Even if all you use your microwave for is to pop popcorn, this has been known to release an extremely harmful chemical called diacetyl into your lungs. (Click here if you want to read more about that). But enough with the doom mongering!!  What you really want to know is, how am I supposed to heat up last night's leftovers at work, when all I have in my office kitchenette is the (now dreaded) microwave oven?

Well, fear not, because I'm here to tell exactly what you can do!  Any guesses?  You think I'm going to recommend this, right?

Well, actually, that's not a half bad idea...it's definitely a step in the right direction.  Buuuut...you still have to warm up your food at home in the morning before you run out the door to work - and I don't know about you, but I've never packed anything in a thermos jar or mug that's supposed to remain piping hot that didn't open up to reveal my food/drink at a tepid temperature at best.  Talk about lunchbag letdown. :( So what's my solution you ask? The brilliant little Crock Pot Mini!!

I was introduced to these adorable little wonders by a classmate from my CNE program (thanks Melanie!), and it has been something I've used consistently ever since the day I bought it.  I've used it for breakfast - just throw in some oatmeal, a little almond milk, frozen fruit, cinammon, honey or maple syrup, and plug it in - and in less than 30 minutes, you've got a delicious (and fragrant) breakfast that'll make you the envy of the office.  Got a delicious homemade soup or chili that needs reheating for lunch?  Plug it in at 11:30 a.m., and by noon, you've got a piping hot, flavourful, but most of all, healthful lunch, ready to enjoy - no nukes needed!!  All in one compact container.  Well actually, it's two containers - the outer shell that actually does the heating, and the inner container, that fits inside the outer one - just like the normal size crock pot:

Bonus - the inner container has a separate lid - so you can store your lunch in it in the fridge the night before, and pop it in the main compartment to take to work the next day.  As easy as grabbing one of those toxic pre-fab freezer meals on the way out the door, and SO much better for you.

Yes, it does take about a half hour to heat to optimum temperature - but as long as you don't find plugging something into a wall outlet 30 minutes prior to lunch an arduous task, this is as easy as it gets, people!  And you don't have to be an office worker to enjoy its benefits either - I've used it at home to warm up small portions of food as well.  I LOVE it! (P.S. - I've also seen these for sale in Canada at Kitchen Stuff Plus - but the cheapest I've seen them is at Target for $16.99). :)

In keeping with the movie theme....do any of you remember this famous scene?

Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate"
It seemed so innocent (and humorous!) at the time.  But unfortunately, the advice being given to Dustin Hoffman's character in that scene from The Graduate was sadly prophetic, and not funny in the least - and today, only 10% of the roughly 300 millions tons of plastic that is produced globally every year is recycled, and seven million tons of it ends up in our oceans.  Steps are being taken to to begin to solve this problem - did you read the news lately about the bylaw passed in San Fransicso, outlawing the sale of plastic water bottles on city property? It may be a small step towards combating what is an GARGANTUAN problem, but it's still a positive step towards eliminating the buildup of plastic on the planet that will take eons to decompose, if ever. And then there's the effect of actually drinking the water that's in the plastic bottles - I won't reiterate the reasons why you should avoid drinking out of plastic here, you're probably more than aware (but in case you're not, here's a good place to start).  The only alternative, in my opinion?  Good old fashioned glass. There are several options out there - sometimes I like to use the ever-versatile and inexpensive mason jar to transport my beverages and snacks:

But one of my favourite re-useable glass bottles is made by LifeFactory:

They come in a virtual rainbow of pretty colours, and are available as baby bottles, right up to a 22 oz. adult size. The (removable and washable) silicone sleeve makes them all but indestructible, but they are still glass, so take reasonable care.  You can get them with sipper lids (on the left, above), or there are also some with built-in straws. They're fun, pretty, and functional, and you guessed it, I love them!! :)

Last but not least - for all you fellow smoothie drinkers out there...what's the easiest way to drink your nice thick green smoothie?  Through a straw, right?  But what are most straws made of?  Yep, you got it - plastic. (I can't remember the last time I saw a paper straw, come to think of it).  Well, never fear, because there is (literally) a mom and pop company out there that is saving the world, one GLASS straw at a time!!  They are awesome, and their name is Strawsome!

If you're craving a green juice right now, you can click here :)
(Also available in Canada through Upaya Naturals - and I've also seen them for sale by the checkout at the Organic Garage).  I know, some of you are probably thinking "whoa, she's taking this glass thing a bit TOO far now...." (believe me, I thought the same thing when I first learned about them) - but think about it - plastic straws are only contributing to the environmental plastic problem - they're polluting the planet too - AND, where's the health benefit of drinking anything out of a glass vessel if it's only being delivered into your body through a piece of plastic?  Wouldn't you rather have your very own, pretty, re-useable glass straw to slurp up your favourite bevvy? (I'm  talking ANY kind of beverage people - these look great in a margarita glass too!) I even use mine to drink my water with (I find it easier to get in my recommended 6-8 glasses a day that way). Yes, sometimes I get strange looks, and even once, I was told it looked like a crack pipe (which probably says more about the person who made that observation than me) - but I can assure you, although I live in the GTA - (Greater Toronto Area), I have absolutely nothing in common with Rob Ford. :)

So there you have it - hopefully I've introduced you to some new products that might be of interest to you, without bumming you out in the process.  (That said, if you actually want to be bummed out, by way of making some informed opinions about the products we use without thinking of the consequences, I would highly recommend reading Slow Death by Rubber Duck, by Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie).

On that cheery note, if you're still with me, thank you for reading!!  Happy Monday, all, and have a wonderful week! :)
